Maryland’s Wear and Carry Permit—also known as a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) Permit—is a hot topic for many residents looking to protect themselves or begin careers in armed security. At STA Training Academy, we regularly receive questions from students about the requirements, training, and process to get certified.

In this post, we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions about obtaining your Maryland Wear and Carry Permit and how our training helps you succeed.

🔹 What Is a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit?

It’s a license issued by the Maryland State Police (MSP) that allows qualified individuals to carry a handgun concealed or open in public.

🔹 Who Can Apply for a Wear and Carry Permit?

You must:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Pass a criminal background check

  • Complete at least 16 hours of firearms training

  • Demonstrate a good and substantial reason (e.g., self-defense, job-related need)

🛡️ STA Training Academy provides all required training through certified instructors.

🔹 Is Firearms Training Required?

Yes. Maryland law requires:

  • 16 hours of training for new applicants

  • 8 hours for renewal

  • A live-fire qualification test

All training must be completed before applying for your permit.

🔹 What Topics Are Covered in the Training?

At STA Training Academy, we include:

  • Maryland firearm laws

  • Use-of-force & self-defense laws

  • Firearm safety & maintenance

  • Range shooting and live-fire qualification

  • Conflict de-escalation and situational awareness

🔹 How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?

After completing training, you’ll submit your application to the Maryland State Police. Approval typically takes 60–90 days, depending on background check timing and demand.

🔹 Does the Permit Cover All Firearms?

No. The permit covers handguns only, not rifles or shotguns. Separate training is required for other weapons or roles (e.g., armed guard licensing).

🔹 Do I Need to Renew the Permit?

Yes. Permits are valid for 2 years after the initial issuance, then must be renewed every 3 years. Renewal requires updated training and requalification.
